Fast forward...

Fast Forwarding to our chickens today........

Zoom --- >    and here we are...!

New Hampshire Red
New Hampshire Red

Our Amazing Cockerel, he's a New Hampshire Red; we got him from an auction last year, supposedly a laying hen...!
His tail is an amazing shimmering blue colour, he's so tame he'll approach anyone. A very well behaved bird, he certainly rules the roost. Whenever he finds some food he'll call to his hens and let them feed first.

Our Buff Pekin Bantam with her two newly hatched chicks... they may not be her chicks as we found about seven different eggs underneath her when we checked, she left five eggs a few days after these two hatched, we have two of these under a lamp as I'm typing this...

Here's one of the little chicks, so cute. we think it may be a Golden Campine cross with the Cockerel due to it's slightly blue feet and black markings.

Here's our Golden Campine Bantam Hen or Road-Runner as we like to call her, she's pretty fast as you can imagine.

Here's Frizzle Frazzel as we like to call her or Rock-Star as our daughter likes to call her... she's a Gold Laced Polish Bantam.

They are all coming on nicely, we're getting 5 to 6 eggs each day from just six happy hens.

I'll add some pics of our other birds soon...

New Post - Eggs Eggs Eggs...

Hi there,

It's been a while and a lot has gone on, we've been producing our own eggs for the last 4 years now...

Here's a Picture of our first chickens:-

July 2010

Rosemary and Thyme - Rosemary the Rhode Island Red is still with us now and yes, she's still a happy laying hen. Lovely large brown eggs with a deep rich organic yellow yolk, perfect for boiling.

Thyme was a Cream Legbar hen, she lay a light pastel blue egg in her day but sadly turned cannibal; eating her own eggs! We took her to a local farmer who took her in, at the time he kept a load of chickens and ducks, all running free range on his land.

See future posts for more chicken and egg news...

How To Tell If Your Eggs Are Fresh...

Here's How To Tell If Your Eggs Are Fresh...

To make sure your eggs are fresh, put a raw egg in a glass of water...

- If it lays on the bottom, it's fresh...
- If it is on the bottom, but the small end is up, it's still fine...
- If it is floating in the middle, but not on top, it should be safe, but not very fresh...
- If it floats, throw it away, it's a rotten egg.Robert

Good Eggs

Egg's Are Good For You...

Eggs are one of the most highly nutritional foods that you can eat...

In fact, one average sized egg contains about 75 calories, 6.25 grams of protein, and 220 milligrams of cholesterol...

It also contains a large amount of vitamins, minerals, macro and micronutrients (including but not limited to: carotenoids, choline, betaine, and many others)...

In essence, in one small package, eggs provide our bodies with essential amino acids.
